The reason Barcelona wanted to move Coutinho on was not just because he isn’t giving the expected level of performance, but also from an economic standpoint, as the Brazilian is one of the highest earners at the Camp Nou.
In addition to relieving themselves of his salary, it would also have given Barcelona more room to manoeuvre in their pursuit of Neymar.
Barcelona are short on funds and know that the only way they can make a move for Neymar happen is to include players in a hypothetical offer.
Despite his poor performances in the Barcelona shirt, Coutinho still has good standing in Europe, and the Blaugrana consider this a good starting point for negotiations with PSG.
The only issue is that PSG don’t want to sit down and negotiate with them and would rather sell Neymar to another team.
Unfinished business
Putting aside the Neymar and Coutinho cases, Barcelona have a lot of work to do after their US tour as outgoing operations remain unfinished.
There are plenty of players, particularly midfielders, whose futures need resolved as soon as possible, ideally before the start of the LaLiga Santander season.
Rafinha, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal all need clarification, just as they did before departing for the USA, and they have now been joined by Riqui Puig, who could leave to get first team football elsewhere.
